q&a

Please share five favorites.

T: movie or television series – Mindhunter
scripture – I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13
childhood books – Little House on the Prairie series by Laura Ingalls Wilder
bookish device – Kindle Oasis
bookish place – Barnes and Noble

B: I’ve never heard of Mindhunter but I definitely say we can be friends anyway!

What are some of the challenges you faced while writing Accidental Target?

T: I sold Accidental Target when I entered The Great Love Inspired Suspense contest. I had the first 3 chapters edited and ready to send in but I needed a synopsis. At the time, I wasn’t even sure how I wanted the story to go. After entering I got the request for the full. Luckily, school was out and I had the summer to finish the book. I sent it in only two weeks before I had to be back to work. I had edits to do after I sold but completing them wasn’t nearly as challenging as having to write the book on a deadline.

B: How exciting! I tend to get more done with a deadline too. Despite the added stress, it provides built-in motivation!

What did you learn or discover about yourself while writing Accidental Target?

T: I learned that I actually write better when I am faced with a deadline. I don’t know what that says about me, but it sure forced the words onto the page.

B: No room for overthinking, I completely relate!

What is your reading style?

T: I mostly read on my Kindle Oasis. I like ereaders because I can have all my books with me wherever I go. I also like to read at night while my husband sleeps. For my research, I like print books. It’s a lot more enjoyable to do research with a paper book in my hand than it is to stare at the computer screen.

B: Ooooooo! An Oasis! I’ve yet to hold one of those in my hands, I bet it’s amazing! I’m a diehard Paperwhite gal but maybe someday…

What’s your writing style?

T: I start out as a pantser first. I get a “what if” question in my head and then I go with it. After the first few scenes, I usually stop to plot it out and work on the characters. I do make an outline but I let the characters take over. It’s important to let the characters have their say in how they want the story to go.

B: I’m all for character freedoms!

Do you have any writing quirks?

T: I have my coffee warmer on the corner of my desk and my Keurig in the corner. I can’t write without a cup of coffee.

B: Sounds like coffee fuels your writing! Thank you so much for taking the time to visit with us, Theresa!

  1. I am old school with a strong preference for print books, especially since I can share them with my older family members who don’t read ebooks.
