q&a
Do you have a favorite bookish habit?
J: I like to be comfortable when reading. Best place is my cozy corner of the loveseat in the living room with a cup of tea, surrounded by my library of book-friends. I find music distracting when I read, so it’s quiet.
B: Absolutely! Give me cozy quiet and a good book any day!
What are some of the challenges you faced while writing Calm Before the Storm?
J: Calm Before the Storm was my first book (this is a re-release), and I knew nothing about writing, so my goal was to imitate my favourite authors. Neither did I know how much research a historical fiction would take. I discovered how essential a timeline was. And all this was pre-Google. Another major challenge was POV. I was not acquainted with point of view nor how to use it. I’ve finally been able to remedy that lack of understanding in this second edition.
B: I remember a pre-Google world!
What book(s) are you reading right now?
J: I usually have a few books on the go at once. Right now, I’m listening to the audio version of Set the Stars Alight by Amanda Dykes. Just finished reading a digital copy of a cozy mystery, A Fatal Journey by Blythe Baker. I also have an ARC from an author friend, and a historical fiction on my bedside table waiting for my attention.
B: Keep those books coming, am I right?!
What is your reading style?
J: I read mostly ebooks now because they are so simple to use, always available, and often very inexpensive. Bookbub is a great way to grow an ebook library. My audiobooks are for multi-tasking!
B: Can’t argue with convenience!
What is your next release and/or what are you working on now?
J: When this historical re-release is done, I’ll be going back to the first draft of my cozy mystery, Crazy About Maisie (Happenstance Chronicles #2). Then to re-editing the historical sequel, Eye of the Storm.
B: Busy, busy, busy!
What’s your writing style?
J: I am definitely a plotter, so the first draft follows a prescribed process. That takes me to what I call the “bland soup stage.” The manuscript will need lots of additions, rounded sub-plots, fixing timing and clues, and generally re-doing everything.
B: It’s the end product that counts even if you have to stomach a little bland soup on the way! Thank you so much for taking the time to visit with us, Janice!
