about the author
Three-time Carol Award finalist, Mindy Obenhaus, is passionate about touching readers with Biblical truths in an entertaining, and sometimes adventurous, manner.
She’s a multi-published author of contemporary Christian romance, and lives on a ranch in Texas with her husband, one sassy pup, countless cattle, deer and the occasional coyote, mountain lion or snake.
When she’s not writing, she enjoys spending time with her grandchildren, cooking and watching copious amounts of the Hallmark Channel.

five favorite secondary characters
M: Secondary characters are fun to write because they can add so much depth to the main characters. Often, they can bring out the best or the worst in the hero/heroine. They can be a voice of reason or a sparring partner, and, sometimes, know the h/h better than they know themselves.
B: Secondary characters are often some of my favorite characters to read as well!
M: Here are some of my favorite secondary characters.
Rose Daniels – Rose was the grandmother of the heroine in my first book, The Doctor’s Family Reunion
. Rose was the kind of grandmother we’d all love to have. She had great faith and cared deeply for others, but she wasn’t a pushover. She’s the type who could point out the error of your ways and you wouldn’t even realize it until her words had a chance to sink in. Then you’d likely be so convicted you’d do whatever it took to get back in her good graces. I wish I could be more like Rose.
Hillary Ward-Thompson – Hillary was the mother of the heroine in my third book, A Father’s Second Chance
, and not only was she a globe-trotting executive, she was also an ornery antagonist. The first time I met her, I wanted to slap her for being so condescending to her daughter. All because Celeste had stepped away from a corporate career to follow her dream.
Hillary was, eventually, redeemed and went on to be a rather important secondary character in my Rocky Mountain Heroes series. Because while she may have been redeemed, she hadn’t lost her sass, and that made her the perfect sparring partner for Clint Stephens.
Clint Stephens – In Their Ranch Reunion
, he was a cantankerous cowboy. He and his wife had fulfilled their dream of building a ranch together. And then cancer took her away, leaving Clint to wallow in his grief. Despite having five sons, Clint was only going through the motions of living. Until he fell ill, and his second son’s high school sweetheart entered the picture. Suddenly, he had a new mission—to see Andrew and Carly back together again. Oh, but Clint wasn’t about to stop there. He had four more sons and a desire to see each one of them find their happily ever after. And when his old high school classmate, Hillary Ward-Thompson, enters the picture, well, let’s just say this cranky rancher has finally met his match.
Lily Davis Stephens – Lily started off as the heroine in Her Colorado Cowboy
, but went on to have a significant secondary role as the best friend of the heroine in Reunited in the Rockies
. On the surface, the friendship between Lily and Kayla seemed rather unlikely. Lily was a wealthy socialite and Kayla renovated historic homes. But God and the wounds of betrayal bonded them and the two were closer than sisters. Despite her wealth, Lily had been dealt some hard blows that had strengthened her mentally and spiritually, and she was fiercely protective of those she loved. She’s the kind of best friend we’d all love to have.
Ouray, Colorado – Ouray has been such an integral part of each and every one of my stories, that it feels like an old friend. One I can’t wait to visit over and over again. The moment Blakely Daniels’ world turned upside down, readers knew Ouray wasn’t just any old place. From the town’s unique setting to the fire hose water fights on the Fourth of July to ice climbing, mining and Cascade Falls, there’s no place quite like Ouray.
Secondary characters are always fun to write. They’re sometimes quirky and often say things no one else would dare. But they also enhance a story and help guide the main characters to their happily-ever-after.
B: I couldn’t agree more! Thank you so much for sharing these great secondary characters with us, Mindy!
