Describe Becoming Mrs. Lewis.
P: Becoming Mrs. Lewis is a novel of not only the improbable love story of Joy Davidman and C. S. Lewis but also the story of a woman’s transformational journey to love of self and other. I began the novel believing I was writing a love story but soon realized that Joy’s fascinating and complicated life was the thrust of the narrative.
B: I’ve heard nothing but wonderful things about this story and I’m looking forward to reading it for myself!
What are some of the challenges you faced while writing Becoming Mrs. Lewis?
P: Writing about such admired and real people was daunting. I convinced myself that no one would ever read the book, and I immersed myself in their work. I attempted to learn their hearts and minds as well as one can on this side of the grave, and then I wrote from what I call “the key of empathy”.
B: Bringing real people back to life in fiction sounds like a huge task!
What did you learn or discover about Joy Davidman while writing Becoming Mrs. Lewis?
P: I discovered that Joy was an absolutely enthralling woman. Falling in love with and marrying C. S. Lewis was only one of the interesting things about her complicated life. I discovered that she was a genius, an award-winning poet, a novelist and a woman ahead of her time.
B: She sounds like a woman well worth writing (and reading) about!
What would you like readers to gain from reading Becoming Mrs. Lewis?
P: I never want to tell anyone what to “get” from my work, but I do want my readers to meet Joy on her own terms. I wanted her to tell the story from her and not about her. I want my readers to meet the woman not behind the man but beside the man. I was so frustrated when I realized how little credit she had been given as the best friend, wife, muse and even co-author she was with Lewis.
B: I’m sure readers everywhere are eager to meet her, I certainly am!
P: My summer release – The Favorite Daughter will be out on June 4th, 2019.
B: I love summer reading! (Reader friends, there is a giveaway of The Favorite Daughter on goodreads but hurry, it ends soon!)
P: Right now I am loving The Lost Queen by Signe Pike.
B: Oh, how intriguing!!!
What is your favorite comfort food?
P: Grilled cheese sandwich. All day. 🙂
B: YUM! There are so many ways to enjoy grilled cheese, too! Great choice!
Do you have any writing quirks?
P: I love to light a candle, do my “morning pages” and dive into the rabbit hole of my story. Often I will write by hand to get into the story and then move to the computer. I don’t know if those are quirks but I do know that I need to make a sacred space and time to enter the world of the story.
B: Quirks just make us extra special! Thank you for taking the time to share with us, Patti!
about the book
Title: Becoming Mrs. Lewis
Author: Patti Callahan
Publisher: Thomas Nelson
Genre: Historical Fiction
Release Date: October 2, 2018
From New York Times bestselling author Patti Callahan comes an exquisite novel of Joy Davidman, the woman C. S. Lewis called “my whole world.”
When poet and writer Joy Davidman began writing letters to C. S. Lewis—known as Jack—she was looking for spiritual answers, not love. Love, after all, wasn’t holding together her crumbling marriage. Everything about New Yorker Joy seemed ill-matched for an Oxford don and the beloved writer of Narnia, yet their minds bonded over their letters. Embarking on the adventure of her life, Joy traveled from America to England and back again, facing heartbreak and poverty, discovering friendship and faith, and against all odds, finding a love that even the threat of death couldn’t destroy.
In this masterful exploration of one of the greatest love stories of modern times, we meet a brilliant writer, a fiercely independent mother, and a passionate woman who changed the life of this respected author and inspired books that still enchant us and change us. Joy lived at a time when women weren’t meant to have a voice—and yet her love for Jack gave them both voices they didn’t know they had.
At once a fascinating historical novel and a glimpse into a writer’s life, Becoming Mrs. Lewis is above all a love story—a love of literature and ideas and a love between a husband and wife that, in the end, was not impossible at all.
