About the Book

Grounded Hearts by Jeanne M. DicksonIn the midst of World War II, Ireland has declared herself neutral. Troops found on Irish soil must be reported and interned, no matter which side they are fighting for. When midwife Nan O’Neil finds a wounded young Canadian pilot at her door, she knows she’s taking a huge risk by letting him in. Not only is she a widow living alone, but if caught harboring a combatant, she’ll face imprisonment.

Still, something compels Nan to take in “flyboy” Dutch Whitney, an RAF pilot whose bomber has just crashed over County Clare. While she tends to his wounds and gives him a secret place of refuge, the two begin to form a mutual affection—and an unbreakable bond.

But Nan has another secret, one that has racked her with guilt since her husband’s death and made her question ever loving again. As Nan and Dutch plan his escape, can he help restore her faith?

My Thoughts

Grounded Hearts fully captured my attention and reader heart! This book is delightfully immersive and engaging and reading it is an experience I won’t soon forget! The rich setting and intriguing historical circumstances saturate the story with a cozy rainy day atmosphere. Bake some cookies and grab your favorite blanket, reader friends, you won’t want to put this one down!

Nan O’Neil is a compassionate and self-sacrificing young woman in need of a big ol’ hug! The demands of her position as the village midwife and the hardships she has faced weigh her down. Honestly, there is more than one man from Nan’s life who I’d like to give a swift kick in the pants. I admire her spunk (hidden carefully beneath her reserved nature) and her determined work ethic.

Dutch Whitney is a natural leader and protector with a strong sense of duty. He has a wholesome boy-next-door charm and a genuine tender heart. I can’t think of anything I don’t like about Dutch, those Canadians are just so stinkin’ amiable! Truly, he’s a maple syrup dream boat and I love the way he makes waves in Nan’s doldrum life. I adore the way honest compliments effortlessly and frequently flow from Dutch’s heart.

Overall, I am amazed and delighted that this is Ms. Dickson’s debut novel, just WOW! I can’t wait to read more stories from this promising author.

  1. I’ve been anxiously awaiting this book’s release.I was born in Ireland and immigrated to Canada when I was a wee ‘un so this ticks all the boxes for me. I remember visiting family in Ireland and hearing stories about those internment camps — and how the locals used to go out and picnic with the prisoners on a Sunday afternoon! An intriguing — and unique — angle to explore World War II. Yours is the first review I’ve read for Grounded Hearts and I’m thrilled it’s as good as I thought it would be. Woot!

  3. Yes, there is Irish ancestors on our family tree. We always grew up very proud of our Irish heritage, with that being the number one country I want to visit someday. I can’t wait to read this book! Also yes, I think it can be hard to remain neutral in conflicts sometimes, especially when they deal with family.
