Where She Belongs by Johnnie Alexander

Where She BelongsShelby Kincaid is ready to move on from her grief. With high hopes for the future, she longs to purchase her family’s ancestral homestead so she can raise her young daughters in the only place she ever truly belonged. She plans to transform the abandoned house into the perfect home of her memories. But she’ll have her work cut out for her.

AJ Sullivan never wanted the homestead. Inherited as a punishment from his grandfather, it has sat empty for fifteen years and fallen into ruin. He’s glad to finally unload it. But a clean break isn’t possible when he can’t get the young widow Shelby off his mind.

Welcome to Misty Willow, a place that will have as great a hold over the reader as it does over its inhabitants. With writing that evokes a strong sense of place and personal history, Johnnie Alexander deftly explores the ties that bind us to home–and the irresistible forces that draw us to each other.

My Thoughts

After the death of her husband, Shelby Kincaid is hoping to recapture the joy of her childhood for her daughters. Although I’ve never lived farther than 15 miles from my hometown, I can appreciate the peace and comfort she expects to find by returning to hers. When family history is deeply rooted in one place, it tugs your heart strings and gives you a feeling of awe.

AJ Sullivan is the reluctant owner of Shelby’s ancestral homestead. Unfortunately, that also makes him the target of her anger over both the initial loss of the home (involving his grandfather) and its current state of disrepair. Shelby’s return stirs up questions and pain from the past sending AJ on a quest for answers and closure.

I love the deep sense of family history and the legacy of love whispered throughout this story. Misty Willow is the kind of place I’d love to visit again and again. Where She Belongs is an excellent story of hope, redemption, and restoration, I highly recommend it!

I won this title in a giveaway on The Sweet South Blog. My thanks to Natalie Monk, Johnnie Alexander, and Revell. The opinions expressed are my own.

Do you have a family connection to a place? My husband and I have family roots here in the county we live. That connection goes back several generations. Not that I’m opposed to moving away, I would love to begin a new chapter in a different locale.

    1. I’m so glad, Johnnie! Thank you for stopping by! And I have to say, I’m so glad Shelby isn’t a hoarder. She has a healthy connection to the things that remind her of loved ones.

      1. I don’t have many things belonging to my grandparents or nothing from my great-grandparents. I’m always just a tad bit envious of people who do so I guess that’s where that came from for Shelby. But no hoarding! You may know that the house is real–I lived in it during my teen years. It sat empty for over a decade before someone restored it. I hoped that someone would be me, but nope! That wasn’t God’s plan for my life. (I’m glad it was for Shelby’s!)

      2. I do love seeing old homes restored! Often the workmanship at the structural level is sound and all they need is a little spit shine (and electrical, HVAC, and plumbing, of course!)
