q&a

Share five favorites.

T: candy – Cow Tales
movie – Steel Magnolias
time to read – Is there a bad time? Nope!
mode of vacationing: Lakeside cabin
childhood books – Sweet Valley High Series

B: Yes! I’d love about three weeks to read books and watch chick flicks in a lakeside cabin with great snacks like Cow Tales! I devoured all the Sweet Valley Twins and Sweet Valley High books. I vividly remember crying over one of the Sweet Valley Sagas in the front row of my fifth-grade classroom!

What is your favorite activity or hobby not related to books?

T: Puzzles. Especially in the last year. There is almost always one on the kitchen island for us to work on.

B: My mom loves puzzles! We worked a few as a family during her last visit. Personally, I’d rather be reading!

Do you have a favorite bookish habit?

T: I have an impressive amount of journals. I’m currently keeping one for a male character in the book I will be working on next to get to know him better. It’s fun writing it in his voice. Had to warn my crowd that it’s not actually my journal! It’s made up. Lol.

B: HA! That could be alarming for your people. Do you have a whole rainbow of colored journals?! I’m definitely telling my budding author about this habit, I think she’ll love it!

Describe your story in five words.

T: Gritty, Tender, Poignant, Laughter, Tears

B: Yes and wonderfully so!

What is your reading style?

T: I like it all, honestly. Just got into audiobooks this past year. Love listening while working on a puzzle or doing chores. I’ve caught myself tapping on a word in a print book, as if it’s my tablet and can highlight. Yes, I’m a doofus!

B: You are not alone, my friend. I’m not ashamed to admit to my own doofusness.

What’s your writing style?

T: I have an aggravating answer to this question. I do not have a writing style. I normally change up the routine of it from book to book. The only thing I’m fairly consistent with is journaling long before I write the first chapter.

B: I’m fascinated but as a creature of habit I could see where you might get a little aggravated by it. Thank you for chatting with us, Tonya! Readers, be sure to check out her recent visit to Seekerville as well!

Under the Magnolias by T.I. Lowe

This night not only marked the end to the drought, but also the end to the long-held secret we’d kept hidden under the magnolias.

Magnolia, South Carolina, 1980

Austin Foster is barely a teenager when her mama dies giving birth to twins, leaving her to pick up the pieces while holding her six siblings together and doing her best to stop her daddy from retreating into his personal darkness.

Scratching out a living on the family’s tobacco farm is as tough as it gets. When a few random acts of kindness help to ease the Fosters’ hardships, Austin finds herself relying upon some of Magnolia’s most colorful citizens for friendship and more. But it’s next to impossible to hide the truth about the goings-on at Nolia Farms, and Austin’s desperate attempts to save face all but break her.

Just when it seems she might have something more waiting for her—with the son of a wealthy local family who she’s crushed on for years—her father makes a choice that will crack wide-open the family’s secrets and lead to a public reckoning. There are consequences for loving a boy like Vance Cumberland, but there is also freedom in the truth.

T. I. Lowe’s gritty yet tender and uplifting tale reminds us that a great story can break your heart . . . then heal it in the best possible way.

  2. Thank you for the fun chat! The journaling idea to get to know characters is quite clever. Under the Magnolias has been on my TBR Goodreads list for quite some time.
