Though once a baron’s daughter, Lady Merry Ellison is willing to go to any lengths to protect the orphaned children of her former village. Dubbed “The Ghosts of Farthingale Forest,” her band of followers soon become enemies of the throne when they hijack ill-gotten gold meant for the king.
Timothy Grey, ninth child of the Baron of Greyham, longs to perform some feat so legendary that he will rise from obscurity and earn a title of his own. When the Ghosts of Farthingale Forest are spotted in Wyndeshire, where he serves as assistant to the local earl, he might have found his chance. But when he comes face-to-face with the leader of the thieves, will he choose fame or love?
My Thoughts
Who’s up for a rollicking trek through the medieval forest? I’m in! (…as long as I can rollick while rockin’ my comfy pants from the safety of my couch or bed!) Reading is the best way to travel to distant lands and times. Don’t you agree?
Lady Merry Ellison is a natural leader and fiercely protective of her fellow orphans. She’s beautifully complex, a tender and compassionate mother figure to the littlest orphans, and also a stealthy, calculating, and skilled leader. Merry’s little community is filled with clever, hard working young people who have benefited and flourished under her teaching and training.
A band of orphans surviving in the forest dubbed as “Ghosts” would be an interesting story in itself but the addition of Merry’s childhood best friend and playmate Timothy Grey elevates the story to a new level of intriguing and suspenseful! Merry and Timothy have to learn to trust one another all over again, come to terms with the past, and figure out what the future holds.
I love this medieval adventure and I’m especially looking forward to learning more about young orphaned Allen’s continuing journey in the second book! The third book in the Valiant Hearts series releases July 5, 2016 and is available for preorder.
