“You made shortcake just for me?” His lips split into a wide grin. He kissed her again, savoring the taste of his favorite fruit a little longer this time. “I may have to keep you.”
Jenna made a happy humming noise in the back of her throat that he found too appealing to be appropriate under present circumstances.
“I could be open to that possibility.” She lifted her chin and accepted another peck on the lips.
The weight of her words slammed into him. He went rigid, hope and fear playing tug-o-war with his insides. Mrs. Davis returned to the kitchen, and he was forced to release Jenna before he could address his accidental comment or her unexpected reply.
Jenna’s eyes narrowed, tracking his movement toward the exit. Dyson felt like a lab rat being studied in its maze. And he needed to get out. Now.
He flashed Jenna what he hoped was an easy-going smile, all while feeling like a jerk for not telling her he had less than six months left in town.
