five favorites
indoor activity
J: Napping – because who doesn’t like to nap?
B: I love napping! I even nap when we go camping.
candy
J: My favorite candy is candy corn, but since it seems to give me a headache, I can’t eat it these days, which is a huge bummer, but there you have it.
B: I’ve never been a fan of candy corn but I’m sorry you can’t fully enjoy it!
J: Mrs. Maisel – the costumes are fabulous and the writing is incredibly smart.
B: I love watching shows with a great wardrobe!
time or place to read or write
J: I pretty much write all day, although I get the most writing done in the morning unless I’m on deadline and then I have no choice but to get as much writing done in a given day as possible. As for reading, I do most of that at night before I go to bed.
B: There’s nothing like relaxing with a good story at the end of the day!
secondary character
J: Mr. Murray Middleton in Diamond in the Rough. He wasn’t supposed to have a large part in the story, but after he showed up in Chapter One, he took on a life of his own.
B: I can’t wait to meet him!
q&a

What is your favorite activity or hobby not related to books?
J: I’m not sure this is a favorite activity, but it’s one I do every day – I power walk, but to fit that into my schedule, I’ve had to take to going really early in order to fit in my five miles. So, I’m up at five, have a cup of coffee, and then out the door I go. It does seem to help settle my thoughts for the day, and since my thoughts can be all over the place, that’s a good thing.
B: Woo! You are an early riser! Go, Jen!
What are some of the challenges you faced while writing your current release?
J: My characters were somewhat difficult, in that they evidently didn’t like how I was writing them. Reginald was supposed to be a bit more snobbish, being the son of a duke, but apparently I took that far because he simply stopped cooperating. We had a few chats about that, and after I allowed him to loosen up just a tad, he finally fell into place.
B: I’m glad you and Reggie got it all worked out!
What is your next release and what are you working on now?
J: Next up for me is Storing Up Trouble, Miss Beatrix Waterbury’s story. It comes out late spring of 2020.
After that is a new series, The Ladies of the Bleeker Street Inquiry Agency. Still early days with the first book in that one, but I think it’ll be a fun series, what with how the ladies involved weren’t planning on becoming investigators, it simply happened due to unforeseen circumstances.
B: Sounds great! Lots of wonderful stories to look forward to!
What’s your writing style?
J: I’m a hybrid – I have to send in a detailed synopsis to my editors before I begin a new series, so I always know where a book is supposed to go. However, with that said, I normally only detail five chapters at a time because once I start, those characters seem to have their own ideas about where they want to go – it’s not pretty if I balk at that.
B: Yes, let’s keep those characters happy!
about the book
Diamond in the Rough by Jen Turano
To save her family from financial ruin, Miss Poppy Garrison accepts an unusual proposition to participate in the New York social season in exchange for her grandmother settling a family loan that has unexpectedly come due. Ill-equipped to handle the intricacies of mingling within the New York Four Hundred, Poppy becomes embroiled in one hilarious fiasco after another, doomed to suffer a grand societal failure instead of being deemed the diamond of the first water her grandmother longs for her to become.
Reginald Blackburn, second son of a duke, has been forced to travel to America to help his cousin, Charles Wynn, Earl of Lonsdale, find an American heiress to wed in order to shore up his family estate that is in desperate need of funds. Reginald himself has no interest in finding an heiress to marry, but when Poppy’s grandmother asks him to give etiquette lessons to Poppy, he swiftly discovers he may be in for much more than he bargained for.
