I never knew what I was supposed to do. (Silence) I never knew my contribution. (More silence.)

Her quivering voice and teary eyes spoke of a deep, hidden pain. Her husband’s shoulders slumped. He took a breath and exhaled slowly, before looking to see if anyone could throw an emotional lifeline to his wife. Awkwardly, those of us seated nearby lowered our gaze. No one knew how to respond, and her two painful, vulnerable statements simply hung in the air.

Forthwith, the international conference for couples in leadership derailed. The carefully crafted agenda seemed unable to address the pain and confusion for the wife of one of its leaders.

As I listened, her two sentences gripped my heart, and I made a commitment: By God’s grace, I commit to share what I know, to impart lessons I’ve learned. I knew hers was not an isolated voice, rather a consistent chorus of women from around the world who live life with world-changers. That day, my existing passion for this subject intersected with my friend’s desperate plea for help. The convergence became the volume you hold.

To restate, this book is not a job description, but a GPS; not a to do, but a to become; not a how to, must do, but a directional compass. Let me explain.

Personally, I am married to a leader with a capital L. Larry’s marriage proposal asked: Will you go with me in helping to reach the world for Christ? My answer, yes, catapulted me into an extraordinary journey (which continues to this day) of life lived alongside a world-changer.

about the author

Debby Thompson and her husband Larry have served in global missions with Campus Crusade for Christ International since 1974, and are counted among the pioneers of Western missionaries who lived covertly behind the Iron Curtain in communist Poland.

In total, the Thompsons spent 33 years in Eastern Europe, witnesses to a period of dramatic social, political and spiritual change. Now living in Cincinnati, Debby is a speaker, writer, and mentor for women around the world.
