About the Author

Walt Mussell lives in an Atlanta-area suburb with his wife and their two boys. He works for a well-known corporation and writes in his spare time.

Walt primarily writes historicals, with a particular focus on Japan, an interest he gained during the four years he lived there. He refers to his work as “Like Shogun, but the heroine survives.”

Outside of writing, his favorite activity is trying to keep up with his kids. As one is in college and the other is in high school, this is proving more difficult each day.

Five Favorite Movie Quotes

Walt: “I now pronounce you man and wife. Proceed with the execution.”

This is from the movie The African Queen, featuring Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn. In this scene, Bogart and Hepburn have been captured by the captain of the German boat they were trying to sink, and are about to be hung.

The captain asks them if they have any last requests. Bogart asks to marry Hepburn. I looked for this on youtube, but couldn’t find it. I highly recommend the movie.

Beth: Oh no! Kiss the bride comes first!

Walt: “I’m the player to be named later.”

This is from the movie Bull Durham and is uttered by the character Crash Davis (played by Kevin Costner) as he walks into the office of his new manager.

I like it as you always hear of baseball trades including “a player to be named later.” In real life, you rarely know who that player is because it’s always a minor leaguer. Here is the clip.

Beth: I’m not sure what it is about baseball movies that makes them so appealing to me (I don’t even like baseball!)

Walt: “Does that matter?”

This quote is from a movie I watch every Easter, The Ten Commandments. The character Nefretiri, played by Anne Baxter, is telling Yul Brynner why she will never love him like she does Moses.

Nefretiri taunts Rameses for most of the movie. This is the one scene, though, where Rameses gets her back with his response. I developed a crush on Anne Baxter when I first saw this movie. She is beautiful. Here is the clip.

Beth: Well, you know what they say about playing with fire…

Walt: “Just a bit outside.”

Another baseball movie quote here. This one is from Major League. The legendary Bob Uecker plays a Cleveland Indians radio announcer downplaying a really bad pitch. Here is the clip.

Beth: I remember watching this goofy film multiple times while growing up.

Walt: “Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”

This is from The Princess Bride. It needs no explanation. If It does, I can only say “Inconceivable!” ???? Here is the clip.

Beth: This movie will never cease to make me roll my eyes 😉

 

Books

Tell us about your latest release

Walt: My latest release is The Samurai’s Heart. It is my first full-length novel. I’ve written. The story was inspired by a cross tile located at Himeji Castle. Most tiles on castles are there to protect against fires, typhoons, earthquakes, etc. However, Himeji Castle has a tile with a cross. That tile survived a persecution which sought to eradicate the Christian faith nationwide.

My book is still secular compared to typical Christian fiction, as there is no overriding faith theme. However, my heroine is a Christian and Christian elements flow through the book, and I hope readers of Christian fiction will find my book’s location entertaining.

Tell us about your next release

Walt: I’m working on two things currently. The first thing I’m working on is the sequel to my current book. It is called The Samurai’s Soul and takes place in Osaka, around 18 months after the end of my first book. The draft of this book is not finished.

The other thing I’m working on is Biblical fiction. Again, though, it will be a secular work with Christian and non-Christian characters. The draft is complete. I’m just trying to edit it.

What do you want readers to gain from The Samurai’s Heart?

Walt: The early contests I entered gathered shock from judges who had never realized that Japan has a Christian history. I’m hopeful that people will feel moved to learn more about the Christian history of that time period.

Beth: I was completely fascinated by the setting and story!

What book are you reading right now?

Walt: Firstborn by Tosca Lee (though I will likely be done with it by the time of this blog). The next book on the pile is The Woman Who Breathed Two Worlds by Selina Siak Chin Yoke.

Beth: My currently reading title changes pretty often as well!

What is your go-to beverage?

Walt: I’m a writer. Coffee!!!
