No Other Will Do by Karen Witemeyer

No Other Will Do by Karen WitemeyerMen are optional. That’s the credo Emma Chandler’s suffragette aunts preached and why she started a successful women’s colony in Harper’s Station, Texas. But when an unknown assailant tries repeatedly to drive them out, Emma admits they might need a man after all. A man who can fight–and she knows just the one.

Malachi Shaw finally earned the respect he craved by becoming an explosives expert for the railroad. Yet when Emma’s plea arrives, he bolts to Harper’s Station to repay the girl who once saved his life. Only she’s not a girl any longer. She’s a woman with a mind of her own and a smile that makes a man imagine a future he doesn’t deserve.

As the danger intensifies, old feelings grow and deepen, but Emma and Mal will need more than love to survive.

My Thoughts

“Good gracious” what a fabulous candidate for my friend Carrie to include in her next KissingBooks Lesson! (check out her latest installment here) I immediately fell in love with Malachi Shaw. Even though he’s an angry, half-starved orphan when he first meets “his angel,” he’s smart enough to recognize one of God’s blessings when he receives it! Tiny little Emma Chandler is innocent, compassionate, and generous, a true angel of mercy for young Malachi.

I really love the idea of a women’s colony in the late 1800s! At that time, women did not have many opportunities outside of marriage and motherhood. Women in abusive relationships would have very few options and would have most likely been forced to remain with their abuser. Emma uses her business savvy to organize Harper Station as a self-sufficient refuge and community for women. When trouble threatens the women, Emma calls on the only man she’s ever truly trusted, her childhood hero and best friend.

Ten years after he left his angel behind, Malachi rushes to her aid without hesitation. Don’t you just love a man of action? I do! While Malachi and Emma work to protect the women of Harper Station, devotion and attraction blossom into something potentially heartbreaking for them both. I’ve loved every Karen Witemeyer book I’ve ever read but this book might just be my favorite one yet!
