David: Sticks and Stone is the third in the series, and after this book, things begin to really ramp up. We wanted to take this story to make sure that the reader really empathized with and understood Rem, Eve, and a few other supporting characters.
The main themes for this story reflect that. This is a story about loss, or the fear of loss, and loyalty. During this story, Rem is forced to ask himself, what’s most important to him, and what decisions he can live with. Is he willing to sacrifice his friendship, and his friends, in order to put his life back together?
I haven’t experienced a lot of loss in my life. I’ve been lucky. But I have seen the very real effects that loss has had on some people that I love, and I wanted to show a character brave in the face of that. Rem is far from perfect. But he is brave. And sometimes, bravery is a necessary quality in order to press forward.
B: So true. Bravery isn’t the absence of fear but the strength to act in the face of fear.

James: Only one? The pressure! These days it’s going for long day hikes (8 miles +) in the North Cascade mountains with Darci (my wife.)
B: That’s so special, Jim! What a wonderful opportunity to spend time together.
What are some of the challenges you faced while writing Sticks and Stone?
Susan: One of the biggest challenges writing Sticks and Stone was making Rembrandt a good guy when it came to the romance. By the time readers get to this book, they understand Rem and his love for his wife, but things have changed in the current world and he struggles with being the good guy in a situation where he longs to not do the right thing. And even that was a struggle…what IS the right thing for him to do regarding the woman he loves?!
Wrangling out Rem’s honest but still heroic behavior was a challenge—ultimately, I just had to let Rembrandt take over and play the game his way. (I guess he’s really the one in charge, anyway…). I think book 3 is where Rembrandt stopped being a partner with the author in the story and really took over as the guy driving the ship. And then things really started getting wild… Hang on…there’s so much more to come!
B: Susie says buckle up, so I’m seeing good things ahead, readers! Thank you all so much for taking the time to visit with us!
