Owen Christiansen has been in a downward spiral since an injury ended his NHL career. But a job on an Alaskan crabbing boat offers a fresh start . . . maybe even a shot at romance with Elise “Scotty” McFlynn, the captain’s daughter.
Used to being one of the guys, to never relying on anyone, Scotty doesn’t believe in happily ever after―especially with someone like Owen. Her instinct is confirmed when Casper Christiansen arrives to drag his prodigal brother home, bringing with him a truckload of family drama―and even worse, the news that Casper is wanted for questioning in connection to a crime back in Minnesota.
But Owen is more than the sum of his mistakes, a truth both he and Scotty discover when she escorts both brothers to Deep Haven as part of her new job on the Anchorage police force. Thrust into an unfamiliar world of family, faith, and fresh starts, Scotty begins to see potential for a happy ending . . . if she’s brave enough to embrace it.
My Thoughts
I was not expecting the heart-pounding adventure I just experienced aboard an Alaskan crabbing boat! Elise McFlynn and her crab boat captain father Red are members of a rare breed. Our household is fascinated by Alaskans in general but those who make their living from the land (or sea) are especially tough, hardy, and tenacious. Susan’s vivid descriptions of the Baltic Sea and the crabbing trade are absolutely enthralling.
Owen Christiansen is hiding from his past and practically drowning in his regrets when he first boards Red’s boat. He is drawn to Elise even though she insists on being called “Scotty” or “sir” and treated just like one of the guys. She is jaded yet determined to keep everyone onboard alive (no small feat in a raging storm). Their experiences on the tumultuous waters, sparks of attraction, and a trip back to the family home in Minnesota send both Owen and Elise on an emotional rollercoaster.
The Christiansen Family series is new to me so I started off with I Really Do Miss Your Smile (Ingrid and John’s novella) just because I enjoy a little extra backstory. You’re the One That I Want worked great as a stand alone but I loved the Christiansens so much I am determined to read the whole series!
I requested the opportunity to read and review this book through the Book Club Network. The opinions expressed are my own.
