The Red Ribbon by Pepper Basham

An Appalachian Feud Blows Up in 1912

In Carroll County, a corn shucking is the social event of the season, until a mischievous kiss leads to one of the biggest tragedies in Virginia history.

Ava Burcham isn’t your typical Blue Ridge Mountain girl. She has a bad habit of courtin’ trouble, and her curiosity has opened a rift in the middle of a feud between politicians and would-be outlaws, the Allen family. Ava’s tenacious desire to find a story worth reporting may land her and her best friend, Jeremiah Sutphin, into more trouble than either of them planned.

The end result?

The Hillsville Courthouse Massacre of 1912.

my thoughts

Corn shuckin’, feudin’, and courtin’… This sweet friends-to-more romance features a gripping suspense element cleverly tempered by humor and unforgettable characters! It’s a recipe sure to capture your attention as you devour it from cover to cover.

Ava’s passionate pursuit of truth and justice and Jeremiah’s patient pursuit of Ava instantly endeared these characters to my reader-heart. While the dangerous shadows that seem to lurk around their idyllic mountain town frequently increased my rate of page-turning, The Red Ribbon‘s storyline is never without hope. I especially appreciate the way suspenseful scenes are often chased by humorous situations or sweet romantic moments… a brave reader I am not.

One of the best things about a multi-author series and specifically True Colors is the variety! Pepper Basham has crafted an intriguing, inspiring, and entertaining story centered around a truly tragic historical event. I highly recommend this book (as well as the other True Colors stories I’ve read so far)!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and was under no obligation to post a review. The opinions expressed are my own.

  1. Friends to more stories are my favorites–they give a strong base to the romance and love–because it’s my love story too.

  2. “Friends to more” is a close second to my favorite trope of “second chances.”

  3. Have so enjoyed all of the True Colors books! Thank you Beth for your thoughts and this wonderful opportunity to win a copy of Pepper’s awesome sounding story.
Not sure what you mean by “Friends to more” stories. I have read thousands and thousands of books in my 60+ years, and may have read some along the way. Thus far I have not read a book I didn’t finish. Some were not what I expected from the synopsis, but then again sometime it’s nice to be surprised.

    1. What I mean by “friends to more” (aka friends to lovers) is that the story features a romantic couple that starts out as friends. Often these are long-time friends until subtlely or suddenly there is “more” as one or both of them notice a growing romantic attraction. I’m sure you’ve read many over the years!

  4. I love friends-to-more stories! I’ve read and enjoyed all the other books in this series! Looking forward to this one!

    1. I really appreciate that Barbour is including different levels of suspense in this series, some are definitely scarier than others!

  5. Friends to more is one of my favorite tropes because there is such a depth in the relationship between friends and its fun to see it develop as they become more than just friends. Plus, I really love Pepper’s books!

  6. Oooh, Roxanne!! Now you’ve inspired me to try for a second chance romance. I don’t think I’ve written one of those yet.

  7. Hope you enjoy, Melissa! It isn’t quite as “scary” as some of the others in the series. More “adventurous” 🙂

  8. I’m looking forward to reading this one! I loved Laurel’s Dream! The cover on The Red Ribbon is really unique and beautiful!

  9. Hey Beth and Pepper! “Friends to more” is my favorite trope. I’m looking forward to reading The Red Ribbon.

  10. I love “friends-to-more” novels & real life scenarios. ? When I first heard of this book’s release, I googled the historical event it’s based on. Wow…just wow! Generational feuds can run so deep… Kissin’ & corn shuckin’, oh my! Looking forward to Lady Pepper’s writing adventure.

  11. I enjoy friends to more scenarios and have read two of the True Colors series. My favorite thus far of Pepper’s books is Laurel’s Dream.

  12. I haven’t read The Red Ribbon yet, but it is on my list of books I will be reading. I’ve been enjoying the True Colors series so much and am certain that Pepper’s story will be another to put on my keeper shelf.
