As y’all may or may not know, I have occasionally had the opportunity to review books professionally. Unfortunately, when that happens I’m unable to share those reviews with my reader friends here. However, one of the publications I previously submitted work to has closed its doors allowing me to now share reviews like this one of The Engagement Plot by Krista Phillips on Faithfully Bookish!
about the book
Six months ago, William stole Hanna’s heart and shattered it in front of millions of people on a reality TV dating show. And now the big-wig CEO is back on Hanna’s home turf in Minnesota and wants her to forgive him? Fat chance of that. But life is swirling around faster than snow in a blizzard, and despite her objections, teaming up with William seems like the only option to rescue her reputation.
William has never regretted anything more than the day he gave that ill-fated interview for the reality show, The Price of Love. But while he can’t change the past, he’s determined to fix the future. He just needs to convince Hanna to forgive him—and pretend to be engaged with him. Simple, right?
When the media erupts with even worse accusations, teaming up and pretending to be engaged seems to be the only way to salvage their reputations. Despite the media frenzy that swirls around them, an attraction neither of them can fight off begins to surface. Could this love run deeper than a scandal, or will old wounds tear them apart once and for all? When all seems lost, it’s only with help from above that Hanna and Will may find their happily-ever-after.
Warmth and witty humor prevail as sweet romance blossoms from the ashes of a reality tv/tabloid fiasco. Despite Hanna’s frustrating tendency to run away from her problems, readers will relate to her very human struggle with thoughts that are brutally honest and often hilarious yet knowingly less than kind. Her good-girl image and country-bred spunk are an engaging complement to William’s perceived bad boy city vibe. William’s antics as he playfully teases and patiently woos Hanna’s heart evoke out-loud laughter and satisfied dreamy sighs. Strong secondary characters and backstory add to the appeal of this book that both entertains and encourages with themes of forgiveness and second chances.
The only thing Hanna regrets more than participating in that reality dating show is the damage done to her reputation and her heart. When William unexpectedly shows up on her doorstep months after the show airs, Hanna battles visions of gouging his eyes out. Appearing on a reality tv show was supposed to give his company a much needed financial boost but when William blunders at the finish line, his board of directors concocts a plan to patch things up. While William is eager to apologize for his part in the negative media frenzy, Hanna’s chilly reception is just the tip of the iceberg.
