about the book

An Elegant Facade by Kristi Ann Hunter (Hawthorne House book 2)

An Elegant Facade by Kristi Ann HunterLady Georgina Hawthorne has worked tirelessly to seal her place as the Incomparable for her debut season. At her first London ball, she hopes to snag the attention of an earl.

With money and business connections, but without impeccable bloodlines, Colin McCrae is invited everywhere but accepted nowhere. When he first encounters the fashionable Lady Georgina, he’s irritated by his attraction to a woman who concerns herself only with status and appearance.

What Colin doesn’t know is that Georgina’s desperate social aspirations are driven by the shameful secret she harbors. Association with Colin McCrae is not part of Georgina’s plan, but as their paths continue to cross, they both must decide if the realization of their dreams is worth the sacrifices they must make.

my thoughts

A prim and proper Lady forced by social courtesy to endure the company of a brutally honest Scotsman below her station may very well find her feathers being ruffled for sport. The lively banter between Lady Georgina and Colin is entertaining and evidence of their unwilling attraction to one another.

It was easy to dismiss Lady Georgina Hawthorne as the spoiled baby of the family in A Lady of Esteem and A Noble Masquerade. Unfortunately, her struggles are much more serious than an overindulged sense of entitlement. Georgina’s calculated aspirations are part of an elaborate plan to secure her future before her deepest secret is exposed. Her ingenuity is both impressive and saddening. The disgrace she expects to endure, even from her own family, keeps her from confiding in anyone other than her loyal lady’s maid which prevents her from forming a single genuine relationship.

Colin McCrae is blessed with keen observation skills and a good head for business. He has amassed impressive wealth and a prosperous network of social connections with his charm and professional savvy. Colin is perceptive enough to notice the many layers Georgina has painstakingly applied to hide her fears and vulnerability. His discrete analysis of her behavior unveils the deep spiritual mark of Georgina’s perception of God and her unworthiness. Despite the uncertainty and unlikelihood of their future together, Colin acts as her confidant and encourages her to seek the Truth.

The Hawthorne House series just keeps getting better! The books do share an overlapping timeline so be sure to read them in order to avoid spoilers. I love the depth of characters and continued presence of main characters from previous books. Kristi Ann Hunter provides a rich regency experience with humor, adventure, and romance!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and was under no obligation to post a review. The opinions expressed are my own.
