q&a

What is your favorite activity or hobby not related to books?

S: Oh boy—everything I do is related to books. I’m either traveling to a cool location for research, or I’m learning a new fun sport, or I’m eating some fun exotic food, or hitting up a museum or national landmark… I guess I just love research, and learning and doing new things.

BUT, if I’m not doing that, then I’m usually puttering around the house, doing some sort of remodel. (I’m a bit of a diy remodel junkie!). Oh, and reading, of course. I’m constantly reading or listening to a book on tape!

B: Personally, I’m not an adventurous sort but I do enjoy reading about adventures! (I have the DIY bug too, we just repainted the cabinets in our camper!)

Do you have a favorite bookish habit?

S: I’m a book graffiti artist! I love to write in my books. I circle passages I love, highlight them, star them, underline words, react with smiley faces or sad faces, scribble out responses and generally “well-love” a book as I read it! (and when I loan them out, I encourage my friends to do the same thing—then we can share the experience together!)

B: My mom does the same thing! I’m on the opposite end of that spectrum, nary a creased or blemished page, lol!

Describe yourself (or The Heart of a Hero) in five words.

S: Brave. Adventurous. Committed. Romantic. Deep.

B: … or both!

Share your inspiration behind The Heart of a Hero.

Key West by scooter

S: I am a girl who loves adventure, which is probably why I write romantic-adventure! My current story, The Heart of a Hero takes place in Key West, and I got the idea three years ago when my family spent a week in the Keys SCUBA diving and swimming.

We scootered around the island and thought up a story about what might happen if you were trapped in a hurricane on the small island. And then…and then Key West was hit with a hurricane and I watched reports and came up with a story about the survivors…and what might happen if you (or someone you loved) were left behind.

A lot of my research was centered around the story of Memorial Medical Center in New Orleans and what happened there after Katrina. (only this is on a much smaller scale!)

B: Please don’t visit my area to imagine a natural disaster!

What did you learn or discover about yourself while writing The Heart of a Hero?

S: I think I learned the most through my subplot characters. I really enjoyed a larger cast of players in this book, and in particular, I loved Angel, Mimi, and Yola. They all represented a different place on the spiritual journey, and their questions and actions made me think through my own journey.

Yola was the most surprising and based on a friend I knew. I learned that God has a journey for each of us, and we don’t need to be ashamed or regretful of that journey, but just grateful that He’s not done with us yet.

B: Amen to that!

What is your next release and/or what are you working on now?

S: I just finished proofs on The Price of Valor, the finale in the trilogy, about Ham and his search for his wife’s fate. It takes us from Italy, back to Minnesota, and then to D.C and it’s a mix of adventure, military thriller, and political intrigue.

I really loved winding in all the characters that my readers love, and finishing up a plotline that has been woven throughout this series (and The Montana Marshalls, the series before it).  I love the Jones, Inc. team, and I hope to spend more time with them in the future!

B: The character cameos are one of the things I love best about your stories! Thank you so much for taking the time to visit with us, Susie May!
