Fate of the Redeemed excerpt
He looked up from his transparent hand to the house. A part of him wanted to go to the man, Lester Sharp, to listen to a redeemed soul as he spoke to Wayne Burmeister, the same man whom Lester had saved with what he thought to be futile life-saving measures. Lester, though he was about to experience a tragedy like none other, had been given the triumph of a second chance. Draven was bound, however, and could not go. But he had shown one. One mortal had finally seen the truth. The light in the house went out. The watcher’s chance to experience humanity was over.
He heard a vacuum of wind before the hit connected with his head, felt its searing bite before a burst of light, like smoldering electricity, crashed into his temple. He was on the ground then, his half-mortal, half-immortal head slamming into the dirt with another burst of white light. Powerful hands pulled him to his right and then onto his back. He stared through the darkness into the ebony eyes of a towering figure. Lightning sparked and danced in his eyes.
Morane.
He was a head and shoulders taller than Draven and half a foot wider. Electricity danced along his body and sparked at the end of his enormous claws. The haze in Draven’s vision cleared enough for him to make out the details of the demon’s enormous, inhuman face. Draven’s supernatural vision clearly saw his nemesis, even though the oily black skin of the demon blended perfectly into the night. He smiled with a hiss, revealing razor sharp teeth that were so brilliantly white, they could stand in as lights in a cave. Their glow temporarily drowned out Morane’s face.
“Quite a show, Draven,” Morane said in a rasping whisper. “A pity you won’t be able to see the unhappy ending.”
Draven clenched his teeth and tried to get to his feet. He was weakened by the blow and not able to transition into his true form without getting away from the demon. The giant, clawed hand grabbing him by the throat tightened. He swung his arms, saw them pass through Morane’s thick, black hide and mentally berated himself for taking so long to transform.
“Caught off-guard, watcher?” Morane laughed, then slammed his head into Draven’s. The force of the demon’s square head cracking into his forehead nearly made Draven black out, but he didn’t have time to assess the damage or pain, for a series of righthand punches pummeled into his face in rapid succession. He swooned, felt his throat nearly collapsing under the pressure of Morane’s grip, and then was on the ground again. He felt the impact as if in a distant tunnel, as if the force of the impact was delayed, and he realized he was losing consciousness.
“You won’t win, Morane,” he said, croaking. The words sounded pathetic, tiny and echoing from the far end of a long tunnel.
about the author
Chad Pettit grew up lost in the world of fantasy fiction but alienated from a knowledge of God. With no real direction in his life, he shipped out for basic training twelve days after high school. He continued down a path of sin and destruction through two combat tours to Iraq, but then God pulled back the blinders, and he met his Lord and Savior.
One passion that never left him was his love for fiction, and in 2013 he went back to school and earned his degree in English. This helped him develop his craft, spending long hours pounding away at the keys until his battles with guilt, fear, and shame came alive on the page.
