Anchor in the Storm by Sarah Sundin

Anchor in the Storm by Sarah SundinFor plucky Lillian Avery, America’s entry into World War II means a chance to prove herself as a pharmacist in Boston. The challenges of her new job energize her. But society boy Ensign Archer Vandenberg’s attentions only annoy–even if he “is” her brother’s best friend.

During the darkest days of the war, Arch’s destroyer hunts German U-boats in vain as the submarines sink dozens of merchant ships along the East Coast. Still shaken by battles at sea, Arch notices his men also struggle with their nerves–and with drowsiness. Could there be a link to the large prescriptions for sedatives Lillian has filled? The two work together to answer that question, but can Arch ever earn Lillian’s trust and affection?

Sarah Sundin brings World War II to life, offering readers an intense experience they won’t soon forget.

My Thoughts

I’ve been anxiously anticipating this second book in the Waves of Freedom series since reading the first, Through Waters Deep, last fall. I am not ashamed to admit I was fangirl squealing as I opened up that manilla envelope and pulled out this beauty! I admire Sarah Sundin’s dedication to her WWII era research, from the pharmacies to the destroyers, she brings the time period to life with her meticulous attention to detail.

Lillian Avery is calmly determined to overcome every obstacle to secure her future independence despite the childhood accident that left her an amputee. Big brother Jim helps her secure a position as a pharmacist in Boston but she doggedly works to prove her worth to her cantankerous employer. Lillian’s determination coupled with her vulnerable emotions make her a relatable and genuine character. The attitudes and everyday obstacles for an amputee during this era are a fascinating element of her story.

Arch Vandenberg loves his life in the Navy but his military career is on the line if he can’t keep his struggle with shell shock under control. He also feels pressured by his parents to return to their opulent lifestyle and work for his father in the family business but Arch is ready to find a woman who will love him for himself, not his future inheritance. Archer’s frustration with gold digger girlfriends has altered the way he relates to wealth and relationships.

Arch is convinced Lillian could be the woman for him but he proceeds with care when she responds to his advances with annoyance and fearful hesitancy. Nevertheless, Lillian’s encounters with suspicious prescriptions and Archer’s observations of his shipmates’ behaviors lead to them to join forces and track down an illegal drug ring. A lack of understanding and limited treatment options during WWII for what we now know as PTSD provide a likely backdrop for Sundin’s drug ring scenario.

Pick up Anchor in the Storm for an exciting, historical, and suspenseful romance!
