Luther and Katharina by Jody Hedlund - Faithfully Bookish review

Katharina von Bora has seen nothing but the inside of cloister walls since she was five. In a daring escape, Katharina finds refuge with Martin Luther and seeks his help to pair her with the noble, wealthy husband she desires.

As class tensions and religious conflicts escalate toward the brink of war, Martin Luther believes that each day could be his last and determines he will never take a wife.

As the horrors of the bloody Peasant War break out around them, the proud Katharina and headstrong Martin Luther fight their own battle for true love, in one of the greatest love stories of history.

My Thoughts

I adore Jody Hedlund’s historical style! I never enjoyed history academically but the way it comes to life on the pages of her books makes want to check out every book I can find about each historical figure she features! Fangirling aside, Luther and Katharina is a beautiful and dramatic story pulled from the pages of history and enhanced for depth and entertainment.

Katharina von Bora may have spent most of her life as a nun but sister has sass and she always stands her ground. This brave woman risks her life for her dream of having her own family. Martin Luther has called for priests, monks, and nuns to forsake their vows, marry, and have children. I’m guessing he wasn’t expecting wagon loads of nuns to show up on his doorstep, quite a predicament!

This beautiful love story between two equally stubborn people takes place during a very tumultous time in history. Persecution of reformers (including brutal torture) and social unrest escalate throughout the book. Reading about the conditions and circumstances these people lived in gives me an even greater respect for their commitment to the reformation.

I received this book from the author by winning a giveaway hosted on her facebook page. The opinions expressed are my own.
