Out of Darkness with Erynn Newman’s characters

I am delighted to introduce y’all to a few extraordinary characters from an exciting and unpredictable romantic suspense, Out of Darkness by Erynn Newman. Our leading lady is here to tell us a bit about the two main men in the story.

Meet Elisabeth

Elisabeth has honey brown eyes, curly auburn hair that looks like fire in the sunlight, and light freckles.

She’s soft-spoken with an easy sense of humor, loves her friends and family fiercely, and has an affinity for chocolate chip pancakes and Christian hip-hop.

She’s an artist who works at her parents’ diner to make ends meet.

Q&A

Describe Drew and Gabe in five words.

Elisabeth: Drew is intelligent, loving, perceptive, faithful, and a survivor. Gabe is funny, loyal, protective, steadfast, and a coffee-snob.

Beth: BOTH are great guys!

What can readers learn from their stories?

Elisabeth: From Drew, I’d hope they’d learn that God is with them even when their circumstances seem impossible and it feels like they’re completely alone. And I think Gabe teaches us that God’s plan is for our good and His glory, even when it’s nothing like what we expected.

Beth: Absolutely! Important lessons.

About Drew

Drew has wavy black hair, ocean blue eyes, and a soccer player’s physique.

He’s extremely intuitive, loves great literature and languages (can speak seven), and has loved Elisabeth for his entire life.

But if you make fun of him for being too sensitive or too pretty, he can also kill you eighteen different ways with his bare hands.

About Gabe

Gabe is Drew’s polar opposite—tall, broad, light brown hair and steel gray eyes.

He’s brash, has a wicked sense of humor, a little full of himself, and prefers designer suits, fast cars, and imported coffee to nerdy books.

He’s Drew’s field partner in the CIA.

Five Favorites

Favorite way to celebrate

Elisabeth: Drew is all about family, so a big meal with everyone from his family and mine. Good food, and a pickup game of soccer in the backyard afterward.

Gabe would have preferred going to a nice restaurant and then doing something thrill-seeking a few years ago. But now he’d fit right in at our dinner table, and it wouldn’t feel complete without him.

Beth: I have to agree with both of them, food is a great way to celebrate!

Favorite books

Elisabeth: Drew loves to read classic literature in the original languages because he’s a big nerd. I love to listen to him read them out loud. I think his favorite is Les Mis. I didn’t mind watching the Hugh Jackman version with him.

Gabe isn’t much of a reader, but he did mention liking Robert Ludlum once. And he had a pretty good collection of comics as a kid.

Beth: Drew is definitely an overachiever in this department.

Favorite inside or outside activity

Elisabeth: Drew would always prefer to be outside. Reading on a blanket under a tree or playing soccer. He’s equally happy being quiet and contemplative or active.

Gabe doesn’t have much use for the outdoors unless he’s going fast. So somewhere enjoying a five-star meal with good company or on the back of his Ducatti with only the wind as company.

Beth: It sounds like both guys know how to have a good time!

Favorite words

Elisabeth: Drew loves words in general, and he’s not limited to one language, but my favorite word to hear him say is “relentless.” It describes the love of a God who would stop at nothing to redeem His people and the love of a husband for the wife he would lay down his life for.

I want to say Gabe’s favorite word is something gross and immature, but more recently, he’s been reading a lot of theology books, and I’ve enjoyed seeing him incorporate a lot of new words into his vocabulary, like atonement, sanctification, and propitiation. He pretends to be too cool for it, but I think he’s starting to adopt our nerdy, Jesus-loving ways.

Beth: Words are powerful!

Favorite food

Elisabeth: Drew isn’t a picky eater. He grew up on Kraft mac and cheese and pizza. He says anything I make is his favorite.

Gabe is Italian, and he has very strong opinions about the right way to prepare just about every dish. His favorite is probably pasta carbonara.

Beth: Drew is my kind of eater! Mac and cheese, yum! On the other hand, Gabe is welcome to cook for me anytime!

About the Book

Out of Darkness by Erynn Newman

Out of Darkness by Erynn Newman

When her husband is killed by a car bomb on their wedding day, Elisabeth literally watches her dreams go up in smoke.

Three years later, she’s beginning to figure out life without Drew—with the help of his best friend and CIA partner Gabe.

But Drew somehow survived, and they must rebuild what was lost with international arms dealers on their trail and an ever-shrinking list of people they can trust.

Gabe should be at the top of that list, but his feelings for Elisabeth may stand in the way.

All three of them end up in a fight for their lives that will test their loyalty to God, country, and each other.
