Natalie’s eyes met the doctor’s, and her head spun as if she still had Yellow Fever.

Phin.

Dr. Phineas Bartholomew Mackenzie.

Her mouth went dry, and her thoughts whirled as she scrambled to organize them. Those beautiful dark eyes…so dark they glittered. Black hair still falling over his forehead. Thin…too thin, she’d always thought, with angular shoulders and long limbs.

Clean-shaven as always, he still gave off the impression that he was bursting with intelligence and energy, his mind always two or three steps ahead of everyone else. Dressed impeccably, knife-edge creases on his pants, snowy laboratory coat, neatly knotted tie, always the best-clothed man in any room. Even his watch-chain glittered in the sunlight, polished to a gleam.

He was the best-looking, smartest, quickest-minded man she had ever met.

Though he never thought of himself that way, as better than others or smarter than others.

Everything about him, remembered, dear, precious…and…forbidden.

Her mind jerked back to that night, on his family’s yacht, in the Mississippi moonlight where he had proposed, getting down on one knee, offering her his heart, his love, and his future.
