Catching the Wind by Melanie DobsonWhat happened to Brigitte Berthold?

That question has haunted Daniel Knight since he was thirteen, when he and ten-year-old Brigitte escaped the Gestapo agents who arrested both their parents. They survived a harrowing journey from Germany to England, only to be separated upon their arrival. Daniel vowed to find Brigitte after the war, a promise he has fought to fulfill for more than seventy years.

Now a wealthy old man, Daniel’s final hope in finding Brigitte rests with Quenby Vaughn, an American journalist working in London. He believes Quenby’s tenacity to find missing people and her personal investment in a related WWII espionage story will help her succeed where previous investigators have failed.

Though Quenby is wrestling her own demons–and wary at the idea of teaming up with Daniel’s lawyer, Lucas Hough–the lure of Brigitte’s story is too much to resist. Together, Quenby and Lucas delve deep into the past, following a trail of deception, sacrifice, and healing that could change all of their futures.

My Thoughts

Although I often find myself reading multiple stories at once (there are just so many books that I want to read!), there’s no literary experience quite like a well-crafted time-slip novel. Catching the Wind is an excellent time-slip!

Oh my heartstrings, sweet little Brigitte and brave young Daniel will completely capture your reader heart and soul with their terrifying escape to freedom. Daniel’s steadfast dedication to reuniting with his dearest friend spans decades and Quenby is his final hope to locate Brigitte. Although Quenby is reluctant to accept assistance from Daniel’s young (and handsome) lawyer, Lucas patiently proves himself to be a trustworthy gentleman.

This story evokes a wide range of emotions for me from the sweetness of children playing to the heartbreak of corruption in our fallen world, the warm devotion of loving friendship to the hopeful promise of better tomorrows. Dobson provides readers with complex characters and settings which are individually engaging and an intricate storyline that weaves past and present into a moving and heartfelt adventure.

I requested the opportunity to read this book through the publisher. The opinions expressed are my own.

Do you enjoy novels with multiple timelines, reader friends?
What do you look for in a great time-slip (or dual timeline) story?

  1. Wonderful review Beth! I have this book on my TBR list, which is very loong, sigh.

Oh yes, I do enjoy novels with multiple timelines if written just so. They are great when written in a way that is not confusing for the reader.

  2. Until recently I hadn’t read a story dealing with two time lines. However, I guess I picked a great one to start on because I actually loved it. The author was so seamless in the transitions that it was quite natural with one time explaining or complimenting the other time.

  3. I love books with multiple time periods! It keeps my brain more active when I have to remember.
I do prefer a print copy instead of an ebook, though, because sometimes I have to flip back and check details from previous chapters.
