Leorah Langdon has no patience for Regency society’s shallow hypocrisy and unnecessary rules, especially for women. She’s determined to defy convention by marrying for grand passion instead of settling for a loveless union like her parents—or wedding a stuffy, pompous gentleman like Edward, the Viscount Withinghall. But when a chance meeting in the countryside leads to Leorah and Withinghall being discovered in his overturned carriage—alone and after dark—the ensuing gossip may force them together.

Withinghall has his reasons for clinging to propriety; his father perished in a duel with his mistress’s husband, and Edward must avoid scandal himself if he wants to become prime minister. He certainly has no time for a reckless hoyden like Miss Langdon. But soon the two discover that Withinghall’s coach “accident” was no such thing: the vehicle was sabotaged.

Can the culprit be brought to justice? Strong-willed Leorah and duty-driven Withinghall will have to work together if they have any hope of saving her reputation, his political career—and his life.

My Thoughts

The queen of fairy tale retellings is ruffling feathers in Regency-era romance with a splash of suspense amidst a familiar Pride and Prejudice-like atmosphere. Readers who enjoy a headstrong female lead like Elizabeth Bennet and dashing yet brooding Darcy-esque heroes will be right at home with A Viscount’s Proposal.

Leorah Langdon marches to the beat of her own drum when society’s ridiculous rules contradict her own common sense. She has spunk and proves herself to be a loyal friend regardless of social class. Given the opportunity, I’d gladly count Leorah as a friend. Her compassionate and self-sacrificial qualities certainly outweigh her more unconventional habits.

Edward Withinghall is determined to live above reproach in order to advance his political career, help the less privileged, and clear his family name. Worthy goals, yes?! YES but at what cost? While both characters experience some level of growth throughout the story, it was Edward’s journey, especially that tugged at my heartstrings.

Since I listened to a large portion of the audio as part of my Kindle Unlimited subscription, I thought I would mention that it was an overall satisfactory experience (even though I think the narrator did Edward a disservice by using a nasally voice for his lines.) This is a great story and one I would highly recommend to fans of regency, mystery, and romance!

I requested the opportunity to read this book through NetGalley but time got away from me and I ended up borrowing it through Kindle Unlimited. The opinions expressed are my own.
